He is also well-known for his interaction with the medical community and his connection with the latest “Heart-in-a-box” breakthrough technology that will likely transform the heart transplant medical process as we know it.
Board-certified pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Mark Plunkett attended some of the most prestigious higher education medical institutions, medical centers and hospitals for his bachelors, doctorate, fellowship, and specialized training programs. While completing these hard-won accreditation, Dr. Plunkett was also employed in hands-on training to complete fellowships and medical programs to compliment his growing and impressive list of educational accomplishments.
In 1978 Dr. Mark Plunkett began his journey to study and save patients through surgical practice at Duke University. He completed his degree four years later, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Dr. Plunkett then went on to the University of North Carolina, School of Medicine, for his Doctor of Medicine, which he completed in 1986. He successfully completed his residency in General Surgery at Duke in 1993. Between 1993-1996, Dr. Plunkett completed two fellowships (one for Thoracic Surgery from Duke University and one for Pediatric Cardiology at the UCLA Medical Center). From 1996 to 2014, Dr. Plunkett has been practicing in all specialties aforementioned (Thoracic Surgery, Congenital Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology Transplant Surgery, Cardio-thoracic Vascular Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Cardiovascular Disease, and Pulmonary Disease). In that time, he has also become Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery ABTS and Pediatric/Congenital Heart Surgery ABTS.
